5 Tricks to Help You Wake Up In the Morning

There’s actually an old song that begins “Oh, how I hate to get up in the morning/ Oh, how I’d love to remain in bed.” Over the years, many people have shared those sympathies.  

If you’re one of them, being on time to work can be a big problem. You may frustrate your supervisor and colleagues negatively impacting productivity. The situation may even end up with you receiving poor reviews for being late or even losing your job. 

Many ways exist to help you wake up in the morning. Here are some tips and tricks to help you wake up and make it to work. 

Plan to get enough sleep.

Perhaps the most common reason people find it hard to wake up is a simple one: They’re tired. People generally need a minimum of 7 hours sleep per night. Many folks need more. 

Just a few simple changes can help if you chronically don’t get enough sleep to feel refreshed in the morning. Go to bed at a reasonable time to get enough sleep! Don’t watch a late-night television program or listen to music late at night.  

While caffeine can be a great pick-me-up in the morning, it can make it hard to go to sleep. Don’t drink caffeine after 12 p.m.  

Set your alarm in plenty of time.

A second frequent reason that people are late is…they don’t get up when they need to. Maybe the buzzer goes off, but the snooze alarm is all too tempting to hit again and again. Maybe you tell yourself you can be out the door in 30 minutes, donut in hand, but it really takes you 1 hour and 30 minutes. 

If you like to dawdle in bed for an hour in the morning, that’s fine. Just be sure you set your alarm at a time that will allow you to do that, and then still get up, get dressed, and be at work on time. 

Get your adrenaline going with music.

A jolt of adrenaline provides a boost of energy. Fear provokes adrenaline, but so does happiness. Hearing a great song or beat can make you feel like moving. So, program your alarm to play that kind of music. Hip-hop, Cardi Bor whatever else calls to you to get up and start dancing around the bedroom.  

Bring light into your room.

Many people find it hard to get up if it’s still dark in their rooms. Let the light in! Either program a bedside light to go on when you need to get up, or draw the curtains to let morning light in (or both!). The more light is shining on you, the less likely you’ll be to go back to sleep.  

Reward yourself for getting up.

Work a reward into your life shortly after getting up. If you love coffee, get a timed coffee-maker that will lure you with the delicious smell of fresh-brewed coffee. If you like a certain breakfast food, stock it in the shelves – then remember it when it’s time to get up. If you love to run or walk the dog, make that part of your morning routine.
