In today’s busy world, you may feel you’re working as hard as you possibly can. You can’t be more productive, you feel. One way to deal with that feeling is to work smarter, not harder. These three tips will help you work smarter.
People are actually more productive if they recharge frequently. In other words, for every 90 minutes of work, you should take a break of up to 15 minutes. Walk around. Sip coffee or water. Then come back to your task.
This may seem as if it would cut into your ability to get things done, but taking breaks actually enhances your ability to work with renewed energy, determination, and focus.
Get enough sleep
Sleep deprivation is a nationwide problem throughout the U.S. If you’re habitually getting less than seven hours of sleep per night, you may be sleep deprived. You may actually feel sleepy, which translates into working at far less than peak productivity.
But even if you don’t actively feel sleepy, you may not be able to focus properly, or to physically or mentally react to a sudden change in circumstances. All of these are symptoms of sleep deprivation. The more sleep you get, the more focused you’ll be.
Work to task, not time
Productive people work with a to-do list in mind. It could be sending out 2 job applications per day or picking up the kids after school, but it’s likely you have tasks to do every day.
A key way to work smarter is to set up the list as tasks rather than specific time estimates. That is, instead of thinking “2 job applications will take me from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m.,” think in terms of the tasks you have to complete. You may have to get addresses or create a cover letter, for example. It’s smarter to think in terms of what you have to do rather than an arbitrary estimate of time required to do it.
